Mastering Google SEO (search engine optimization) is an important process to market your online presence to internet users. The title is critical for telling Google and internet users about your website’s content. Your website’s title will appear in the Google search results, and people will click on a website based on the title and the description below it featured on Google’s search results page. In a webpage’s HTML document, within the <title> tag, website owners should create specific, concise titles rather than vague descriptions. For example, on a news webpage that features an article about how Election Day polls show President Obama is leading Mitt Romney, the title of the page should read “Election day poll shows Obama leads Romney.”

Here, if the title simply stated “election poll” or “presidential election poll,” Google would inundate the searcher with results about earlier presidential polls and non-presidential election polls, excluding the relevant webpage from a high search result. Vague titles kill your Google SEO. By specifying that the article is about the poll conducted on Election Day regarding the election between President Obama and Mitt Romney, the page is likely to be near the top of a Google search for the terms “election day poll Obama,” or “election day poll president.”

Another reason you want the title to be unique is that if there are hundreds of pages with the same keywords in their titles, yours would have little chance of making the first two pages of the Google search results for those keywords. Such keywords are referred to as “high competition” keywords. Your page is more likely to be seen by using low competition keywords that still draw a significant number of Google searches.

To determine whether the keywords you wish to use are high or low competition, use the Google Keyword Tool. This tool can also help you figure out other keywords related to your primary keywords that would help market your website effectively. Using related keywords in your web pages’ content is another important strategy to maximize your optimization of the Google search engine. Users will not all use the same search terms to reach the same results, so it is important to include various keywords that refer to similar content to increase your Google search profile. For example, if your website features manuals on how to make hand drums, you might want to include the words “guidebook” and “manual” to increase the chances that you will draw users who searched both terms regarding how to make hand drums.

Essentially, you want the title to include the most important information about your business. This can include the location of your business, what types of services you provide, and the name of your business. In turn, your web pages will more likely grab high Google search positions when people search for those specific terms.

Meta Descriptions

Next, tailoring your meta descriptions properly will enhance your website’s Google SEO. Along with the title, your web page’s meta description will be featured in a Google search if your webpage is among the results. So again, you want to describe what your website offers to entice the user to click on the page, although you can write a sentence or two rather than just the few words you would use in the title. If your webpage offers guides and forms about how to obtain a divorce, then the meta description should read something like “Legal Divorce Co. offers easy, inexpensive divorce forms and guides for divorces in New York, South Carolina, and Florida.” Further, make sure to avoid vague descriptions, just like with titles.

When applying SEO for Google you will need to write descriptive URLs. Like the title and meta description, your webpage’s URL contains information useful to Google and internet users. Thus, both are more likely to select your webpage if they notice the URL contains information relevant to the search query. If you include important keywords in the URL, rather than arbitrary numbers or code, you will improve your website’s Google search engine optimization.
